Birds Nest Fern is an epiphyte which looks stunning when planted high up in the terrarium in a pocket of soil in rocks or a fork in a branch. It can also be tied to a branch with moss around its roots to hold soil. If planted in soil then it needs a rich soil which will hold moisture but does not waterlog.
The main condition to provide well is enough humidity. Temperature between 18-24ºC is preferred. This species enjoys it’s soil to remain moist at all times, but not soggy. Water around the edge of the center rosette to avoid the water becoming stagnant in the center, which may cause rot.
Common Problems
- Frond tips brown: Most likely cause here is dry air and lack of humidity. The solution is to increase humidity levels.
- Brown dots on underside: These are called spores which are used for propagation – These spores show you the plant is healthy and well.
- Limp and wilting plant: You could be possibly over-watering the plant.
