Frequently Asked Questions About Java Wood
What is Java Wood?
Java Wood is a natural hardwood branch that is widely used in reptile vivariums, amphibian enclosures, paludariums and bioactive setups. Its distinctive twisted branches and intricate shapes create realistic climbing structures and natural displays, with every piece being completely unique in shape, texture and appearance.
Is Java Wood safe for reptiles?
Yes. Java Wood is a safe, durable and non-toxic natural decoration suitable for reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. It provides secure climbing opportunities, basking areas and environmental enrichment for a wide variety of species.
Which reptiles can use Java Wood?
Java Wood is suitable for many climbing and semi-arboreal reptiles and amphibians, including:
- Crested Geckos
- Gargoyle Geckos
- Day Geckos
- Chameleons
- Tree Frogs
- Bearded Dragons
- Royal Pythons
- Corn Snakes
- Rat Snakes
- Monitor Lizards
- Many species of tarantulas and other invertebrates
Can Java Wood be used in bioactive enclosures?
Absolutely. Java Wood is an excellent choice for bioactive vivariums. Its natural branching structure creates three-dimensional climbing areas, supports epiphytic plants and mosses, and helps create realistic, naturalistic habitats for tropical and arid species alike.
Does Java Wood rot or go mouldy?
Java Wood is an extremely dense hardwood that performs well in both dry and humid environments. While temporary surface mould can occasionally appear in newly established bioactive enclosures, this is usually harmless and is often consumed by clean-up crews as the enclosure matures.
How do I clean Java Wood?
Whilst all of our natural décor is fumigated on import to make it safe from pests, being a natural product it can often be a little dusty. If you wish to clean it before use, remove any loose debris with a soft brush. If required, rinse with clean water and allow it to dry completely. Avoid using soaps, detergents or chemical cleaners, as these can leave residues that may be harmful to reptiles.
Can Java Wood be used in humid vivaria?
Yes. Java Wood is highly durable and performs exceptionally well in humid reptile and amphibian enclosures. Its dense hardwood structure makes it resistant to breaking down over time, making it a popular choice for tropical vivariums and paludariums.
Will I receive the exact piece shown?
Yes. Every piece of Java Wood we sell is individually photographed, so you will receive the exact piece shown on the product page. This allows you to choose the perfect shape and size for your enclosure with complete confidence.
What size Java Wood should I choose?
The ideal size depends on your enclosure and the species you keep. Smaller branches are ideal for geckos, frogs and smaller snakes, whilst larger multi-branched pieces create impressive climbing structures for larger arboreal reptiles. Every listing includes measurements to help you choose the perfect piece for your setup.
Why is every piece different?
Java Wood is a completely natural product, so no two pieces are ever identical. Variations in shape, branching, colour and texture are completely normal and are part of what makes every enclosure unique and natural-looking.
Why buy Java Wood from Buzzard Reptile?
